Global Integration UpdateCommon Ground for the Common Good
Special News--April 2018 Enough Campaign Non-Communicable Diseases"We've had enough. Have you?"“Governments are sleepwalking into a sick future, while solutions to the NCD pandemic exist. Its time to translate commitments into action and progress."Katie Dain, CEO, NCD Alliance
This Special News Update focuses on taking action to confront the growing pandemic of Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs). Some of the main NCDs include cardio-vascular, respiratory, diabetes, and cancer diseases as well as mental health disorders. We feature the Enough Campaign, officially launched yesterday on 20 April. This international and widely endorsed Campaign calls for people's active involvement in combating NCDs (on our end we have been giving input on the inclusion and impact of mental heath in the NCDs). The Campaign especially calls on governments to fulfill their commitments and to ramp up their efforts to prevent and control NCDs. Watch the one minute overview video HERE. Why are NCDs important? NCDs account for nearly 40 million premature deaths per year (the physical NCDs, not including mental heath). Some of the major influences-causes include physical inactivity, unhealthy diets (including high intake of trans-fats, sodium, and sugars), obesity, tobacco use, harmful use of alcohol--not to mention poverty and inadequate health services, exploitative profiteering by the food, beverage, and tobacco industries, etc. For more ideas on staying updated on global issues/resources, see the list of topics in the Global Integration Updates.
Taking Action to Prevent and Control NCDs
The Enough Campaign
“Death and illness caused by noncommunicable diseases bring suffering and heartache to millions of people worldwide every year – those who live with the diseases, as well as their families and friends. The greatest injustice: much of this NCD suffering and death is preventable, and we have long known the solutions. An obstacle to sustainable development, inaction in addressing the risk factors and health system weaknesses continues to drive up the prevalence of NCDs. This is unacceptable. We have had enough of waiting for meaningful action.” (Enough Campaign website) We encourage you to learn more about NCDs, the NCD Alliance, and the Enough Campaign’s effort to positively impact the United Nations third High Level meeting on NCDs (27 September 2018 in New York). Visit the Enough Campaign website and tap into the relevance of NCDs via the one minute Campaign video. Also be sure to visit the NCD Alliance website for more background information and resources.
